Pronounced ray-key, Reiki is a laying-on of hands healing technique that uses ki, or life force energy, to rebalance the body, mind, spirit.  In early twentieth century Japan, spiritual aspirant Mikao Usui, organized a system of healing practices that became known as Reiki, Rei meaning “universal” and Ki for “life vibration or force.”  The treatment is performed with the client fully clothed and laying on a massage table.  The practitioner then places their hands in different positions on or over the client’s body.  A feeling of warmth is often felt by the client from the practitioner’s hands.  Clients also report feeling very relaxed and sometimes even fall asleep.  Reiki helps to reduce stress, pain and anxiety, and helps in the recovery process after surgery and trauma.  Increasingly, doctors and nurses are using Reiki in medical emergencies and surgeries, psychiatric units, retirement communities and hospices.

Research on the effectiveness of Reiki has been proven to be successful, and it continues to baffle scientists.  The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine has funded studies focused on Reiki’s ability to help individuals with fibromyalgia, prostate cancer, and diabetes, just to name a few.
