Surya Namaskar – Half Sun Salutation

This season create a flowing practice using the breath. As you move from one pose to the next focus on the movement being in sync with the inhalation and exhalation. Let the breath move you, not the mind.

Here is a simple sun salutation to get you started:

Begin in Mountain Pose, Tadasana.

Inhale as you lift your arms up over your head, along side your ears into Urdva Hastasana.

Exhale, bending from the hips, fold forward to touch the floor, a block or your shins in standing forward fold, Utansana.

Inhale and lift your torso so that it is parallel to the floor, flat back and chin tucked (unlike the picture) so that the neck stays inline with the spine.

Exhale and fold forward again, seeing if you can bring yourself a little closer to your legs.

Inhale, soften the knees, and sweep your arms up over your head as you come back to standing.

Exhale and lower the arms back down, bringing your hands into prayer position at the center of the heart.
