Hello Friends!

Watching the snowboard cross event at the Olympics, the commentator referred to the competitors’ knees as “shock absorbers.” The description definitely seemed apt as I watched the competitors bend their knees as they whooshed over hills, absorbing the impact of the hard ground beneath them.

Fortunately, we don’t put our knees through the wear and tear of most Olympians, but still our knees bear most of our weight while standing and are very important to our functioning.

Knee pain and knee surgery are prevalent in the US, and Yoga can be great for knee health by correcting mis-alignment to the knee, while strengthening and bringing flexibility to the muscles that support the knee.

Balanced action is required through the muscles of the legs including the inner and outer quadriceps so that the kneecap stays aligned. We will explore this balanced action as we strengthen the muscles around the knee and also review tips to keep our knees protected and safe through our practice and beyond.

Come to practice ready to play- exploring the actions of the foot, knee and hip as we look for our own version of Olympic glory in poses that invoke a sense of lightness, stability and adventure.
